Pre-Made Pelt Bags: What You Need to know?
my pelts are sourced ethically, meaning they come from fresh roadkill, unless I receive donations from hunters or trappers. As a result, the pelts may vary in terms of animal species and quality.
• The tanning process time may vary depending on the type of animal. All pelts must be skinned from the animal, salted for 2 days to remove moisture and set the hair, then undergo pickling, which takes 30 minutes for medium and small animals, and 48 hours for larger ones. After pickling, the pelts are treated with a baking soda bath to neutralize them, which takes approximately 30 minutes. The pelts are then dried for at least 2 hours before a tanning oil is applied. The final step is to allow the pelts to tan, which typically takes 7-8 days. After tanning, the pelts are treated with a bath in Dawn to degrease them, and then they must dry out again before they are completely finished and ready for me to start processing and making the bag. The tanning process requires a great deal of patience, as rushing can lead to undesirable outcomes, such as rotten or smelly pelts, or pelts that slip hair.
